About Dr. Clouse

Who is a good candidate for LASIK?
The criteria for being a LASIK candidate include a minimum age of 18, healthy eyes, a stable refractive error that falls within a certain range (up to 15 diopters of nearsightedness, 4 diopters of farsightedness, and 4 diopters of astigmatism), and no collagen vascular disease or autoimmune disease (rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, etc).   Most importantly, you must have realistic expectations.  LASIK does not correct for presbyopia so patients who normally need reading correction or bifocals before surgery will still need reading correction or bifocals after the surgery.  Another option is to have monovision LASIK.   As with any surgery, there are risks involved.  However, the risks of an adverse outcome are less than 1% with an experienced surgeon.
I wear contact lenses and often get red eyes... what can I do?
Dry, red, irritated eyes are symptoms of many different things.  Contact lens wear usually slows any healing process with the ocular tissue so temporarily discontinuing or cutting down your lens wear time is usually advised.  The most common causes of red eyes are dry eye secondary to computer use, viral infection, medication changes (such as antihistamines and birth control pills), over-use of contact lenses, contact lens solution problems and anything that dehydrates your lenses (A/C, heater, fan, etc).  If any of your symptoms persist/worsen or you're experiencing any ocular itching, ocular discharge, ocular pain, vision changes, light sensitivity or a sore throat/cold, have your eyes examined for potential treatment.
